About Bob Lobel

Bob Lobel, award-winning sports director for CBS4 News and UPN 38, has covered sports for CBS4 since 1979. He is sports anchor for CBS4’s evening newscasts Sunday through Thursday.

Lobel also hosts “Sports Final,” Boston’s top-rated local sports show highlighting the week’s sports news and featuring local newsmakers from 11:30PM to 12:00 midnight on Sunday evenings. A panel including some of New England’s most-knowledgeable and respected sportswriters and broadcasters join Lobel in lively exchanges on the top sports stories of the week. One of the most memorable episodes of the show, an historic edition of “Sports Final” featured Lobel’s interview with three of Boston’s most famous athletes -- Bobby Orr, Ted Williams, and Larry Bird -- together for the first time.

During his tenure at CBS4 Lobel has covered the entire sports spectrum in New England including the Super Bowl victory of the New England Patriots in January 2002, the Boston Celtics’ world championships, the Red Sox tries at the World Series title, the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals and the America’s Cup races off Newport, Rhode Island. He has also anchored the station’s Boston Marathon coverage since 1982.

Lobel joined CBS4 in December 1979 as sportscaster on the weekend newscasts and moved to his current position in July 1981. Throughout his career Lobel has been honored with numerous awards including being named Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year nine times.
In addition to his work on television, Lobel is active in many community projects and donates a great deal of his personal time to local charity organizations. He has actively supported the fundraising efforts of the Liver Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation.

An avid golfer, Lobel spends much of his personal time at charity golf tournaments, raising money and awareness for a variety of groups including The Jimmy Fund, The Genesis Fund and The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. For the past several years he has been Honorary Chairman of the annual Multiple Sclerosis Super Cities Walk and annually hosts the Bob Lobel Ski Classic at Attitash Mountain to benefit The Genesis Fund. Lobel has also been a supporter of the Jane Doe Safety Fund, a three million-dollar project to support domestic abuse shelters and safe houses around the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Prior to joining CBS4 Lobel worked as sports director at several radio stations in Vermont and New Hampshire. He worked for WBZ Radio in Boston from 1976 through 1979, first as a weekday afternoon sports reporter and host of the Saturday evening talk show “Calling All Sports,” and later as sports director. Lobel came to WBZ Radio from WGIR Radio in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he worked as sports director and play-by-play sportscaster from 1972 to 1976. He also worked as sports director at WJOY Radio in Burlington, Vermont from 1971 to 1972.

Lobel received a bachelor of science degree in Education from Kent State University and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Vermont. Lobel and his family reside in the Greater Boston area.
